Local pre-school, Smiley Happy People, has donated 54 kilos of food to Launceston Foodbank after a successful harvest collection.
Team members Helen Filde and Vron Walters met with Yvonne King from the foodbank to hand over their donations, which were collected across the nursery's three sites at Launceston (Newport), Trethorne and Egloskerry.
Helen Filde, deputy manager at Smiley Happy People Egloskerry, said: "Local community is very important to Smiley Happy People, as we are based in the community, come from the community and serve families in the community. Our Smiley family always wants to do the best for children and families, therefore we want to support local causes where we can.
"The foodbank is close to our heart as good nutrition is essential for developing minds. We support our little ones to begin to understand the world and all the different people in it. The harvest collection was an amazing opportunity to support the foodbank and open discussions with our little ones about the importance of harvest, where our food comes from and helping others. We collected over three three sites for three weeks, filling eight very large 'bags for life'. The staff at Smiley and our families were so generous!"
But the generosity doesn't stop there. The team are now holding a Christmas toy drive, until Friday 29th November, to collect donations of good quality toys. The items collected will be given to the foodbank, who will distribute them across the community to help families provide Christmas gifts for their children.
Helen explained the project in more detail: "Recently I saw a Facebook post about clearing toys out before Christmas rather than after, and began to realise how hard it must be for some families to afford gifts for their children at Christmas.
"We decided to launch an appeal to encourage anyone having a clear out to donate usable and good quality unwanted toys. The appeal is running for the whole of November and we aim to get the toys to the Foodbank Charity Shop by the beginning of December. All of the three sites are accepting donations, or the toys could just be dropped off directly at the foodbank shop if that is more convenient.
"We are also starting to talk to our little ones about helping others and children who may have a different Christmas to them - the children are amazing and we have had some wonderful donations from them!"
The toy drive will run until 29th November. Donations should include good quality toys, crafts, games and books, and can be dropped off at the Smiley Happy People sites in Newport, Trethorne and Egloskerry.
Well done to the staff, children and parents at Smiley Happy People!
