Launceston Arts Weekender: A celebration of the local arts community

This weekend, the local arts community will take centre stage as the very first Launceston Arts Weekender gets underway.

Over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 6th, 7th and 8th September, there will be a chance for the community to take part in workshops, discover new artists, authors and musicians, and realise their own artistic talents and abilities. A series of activities will be taking place across different venues in the town, and it’s shaping up to be a fantastic community event.

This month, you’re likely to come across some beautiful pieces of art in many shop windows across town with Launceston’s fifth Shop Window Exhibition. Fifty paintings will peer out from shop window displays, giving art lovers the opportunity to discover local artists.

The ‘Going for Gold’ art show will be based at 4 Market Street, while ‘Art Work by Mary Harold’ can be found at the Merchant’s House throughout the weekend. Meanwhile, there will be set events and activities for each of the three days, as follows:

Friday:

‘Look Again’ writing workshop with Cathy Galvin, 9am-11am, meeting at Costa (town centre).

FLIC Film Night, ‘One Love’, at Launceston Town Hall, 7pm.

Saturday:

Animation workshop with Damien Jones, Launceston Library, 10am-11.30am.

Author’s workshop with Ellie Jackson, Launceston Library, 11.30am-1pm.

Sketch and Snack with Karen and Claire, on the Castle Green, 1pm-3pm.

Open Mic ‘Haikus’, The Byre, 7pm.

Sunday:

Launceston History Walk and Causley Poems with Rob Tremain, meeting at the Castle gate opposite Launceston Town Hall, 10.30am for approximately two hours.

Live music at Keep Audio, Broad Street, 1pm-3pm.

Poetry in Ruins open mic with the Home Ed Choir, St Thomas Church Priory, 2pm-5pm.

This special weekend is a great chance for art lovers, budding and existing artists and creatives, and those who simply want to take part in some community activities to revel in the local arts world, and go home feeling a little more creative.
