Fireside reading: An autumn book recommendation from The Byre

Sarah Bradley, owner of The Byre, has delved into the bookshelves of her beautiful shop to recommend a book you won’t be able to put down.

Autumn is approaching. Those poolside easy reads have served their purpose and you are now looking for the perfect ‘fireside book’.

It’s time to create a cosy reading nook! Your favourite chair, a snuggly blanket and some comfy cushions. Maybe a glass of something special, or just a beautifully brewed cuppa. I like to light a scented candle to get the atmosphere just right. My current favourite is ‘Sunday’ by La Luna. Handmade just up the road in Lewannick, these candles are just exquisite. Now the scene is set, and it is time to find the perfect book.

Since starting our bookclub here at The Byre earlier this year, we have read a variety of books, but our stand-out favourite is ‘In Memoriam’ by Alice Winn. Set just before and during World War One, the story follows two young men on their journey to adulthood whilst negotiating the brutality of war and forbidden love. It’s an emotional but brilliant read, which despite the subject matter manages to include moments of lightness and even humour. I cannot recommend this book enough!

For those of you who aren’t fiction readers, we stock a wide variety of genres including many books on nature, wild swimming, rewilding, women’s health, self care and home design.

For those who have younger readers in your reading nook, we stock a great selection of baby and toddler books. My personal recommendation would be the series of books by The Wild Tribe Heros, which help to educate both children and adults on important environmental issues.

We also stock a range of poetry books, which are popular with our local poets of which we have many. Our Open Mic Poetry evenings continue to be a great success and we look forward to hosting more of these over the next few months.

Happy cosy nook reading!
