Extend your summer with autumn florals

A note from the garden, by Ella Payne

There may be an autumnal feel in the air, but it is still possible to prolong your summer garden a bit longer. Many late flowering plants will continue to flower until November and can be grown in various situations whatever your space.

In my garden...

Dahlias make an undoubtedly colourful statement, flowering until October in many forms and colours.

The more you pick, the longer they last. Grasses provide tall feathering structure and almost sparkle as the sun shines through them. Hardy Perennials such as Japanese anemone, Penstemon, Asters, Sedums and Rudbeckia are later flowering, give winter interest and provide food and shelter for wildlife. Left in the ground, they will reward you year after year.

Shrubs and Trees such as Hydrangea and Buddleja slowly changing colour, and the ripening fruit of crab apples are a sure sign that seasons are changing.

Annual Summer Bedding plants grown for one season such as Cosmos, Begonias and Busy Lizzies are long lasting and well-suited to pots.

Harvesting from the vegetable garden is at its peak now with runner beans, courgettes, squash, sweetcorn, tomatoes aplenty to swap and share.

There are many ways that elements of the garden can help us move into autumn, let’s hope for some kind weather too.
